Seychelles

To see and do

Mahé island’s reputation is marked by its funky markets, the Botanical Gardens (with coco-de-mer, giant tortoises and orchids), the carbon copy of London's Vauxhall Bridge Tower Clock in Victoria, and its colonial-style mansions, cinnamon and vanilla plantations, and MOST importantly, its fantastic beaches.

Mahé's powdery white beaches number almost 70, most of which are cloaked by lush vegetation, plantations of coconut palms, tea, vanilla and cinnamon. From most of them you’ll find exceptional vistas of neighboring islands.

Aside from its myriad water fun options Mahé also offers fun on horseback, in golf, tennis, and bicycling and more.

Culture-holics will enjoy Victoria city, Mahé's museum hub. In the National History Museum on State House Avenue sits the original "stone of possession" laid in 1756 as a symbol of France's possession over the islands. Among many other testaments to its short history, you will find also fine depictions of Seychellois folklore, music and the history of spice development, stemming from its fame as the land of sugar (sand) and spice (trade).

On Rachel Street is the SPUP (Seychelles Peoples' United Party) headquarters and Museum, a display of photography and weaponry chronicling the party's 40+ years of history.

Art adventure should also be on your Seychelles to-do list. Most of Seychellois artists live on Mahé. An artist’s atelier, marked by signposts, may be a gallery or more often, his/her home. As you enter, artists warmly welcome you, readily opening up their lives and art. Among the numerous artists of the Seychelles: Donald Adelaide, Michael Adams, James Auguste, Tom Bauers, Alain Camille, Georges Camille, Gerald Devoud, Antonio Flippin, Christine Harter, Nigel Henri.

Check out Christy’s Art Gallery on Quincy Street, Victoria, for originals and prints.

For a slightly offbeat art exploit, take a trip to the outskirts of Victoria towards the Beau Vallon beach. Across the bus stop you’ll find a small wooden teahouse cum gallery, where you can marvel at and buy local artwork in a relaxing ambiance with tea or coffee and cake.
