Events

Its short history makes a short list of Seychellois traditional celebrations. The few that they have are mostly patterned after Roman Catholic events.

Creole Festival

Every October 28th , the main cultural event of the year celebrated throughout the Creole world, a big six-day festival demonstrative of Seychelles culture with music, dance, arts, craft, cuisine and customs, bursting with color and energy. More and more tourists come to partake of the festivities each year. Some of the highlights are fashion shows (sware kreativite), Dimans Kreol Bor Lanmer (Sunday on the beach), and music performances.

New Years Day

Big family day with music and dancing, feasting at night.

Holy Week

One of the most important celebrations where families attend church services together, memorialize Jesus’ sacrifices with street parades, parties and food for all.

Liberation Day

In remembrance of the initial resolution which led to total independence on 29 June, 1976.

Independence Day

A national holiday on all islands, when locals manifest their national pride with flag flying and other patriotic pursuits; local parks are full of picnicking families, capped with spectacular fireworks at night.

Assumption/La Digue Festival

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary, happenings everywhere, the biggest of which is at the church of La Digue. Mahé and Praslin locals gather on the smallest of the three main islands to offer prayer and thanks and honour the Virgin Mary.

All Saints Day

Observed every November 1st, as with the rest of Catholic-dominated countries, a religious event to remember the dead with masses celebrated in all churches and lighted candles on the graves of loved ones.

Christmas

Like most of the rest of the world, Christmas is family time, with heaps of parties and feasting. Family members take turns hosting the Christmas celebrations of colossal dinners followed by gift-giving and other fun activities.
