Seychelles

People

The Seychelles Kreol or Seselwa or Seychellois are a pretty cool blend of French, African, Indian, Chinese, and Arab ethnicity. Despite these diverse racial influences, Roman Catholics still prevail (83%), some Anglican (6%), tad other Christian (3%) and Hindu (2%), a pinch Muslim (1%), Seventh-Day Adventist (1%), and none (1%).

The down-to-earth island life enjoyed by the locals is enviable. Pre-airport days allowed entry only via the ocean, keeping foreign influence few and far between. And, even when its international airport opened in 1971, tourism has been controlled with such devotion. Consequently, the islands’ inherent charm has been safeguarded, while their unique language and culture have ripened, driving its roots deep into the Seychellois psyche.

Seychellois are generally easy to get along with, are very hospitable and love to invite guests to their homes. Should you be granted this fortune, bring a simple gift as a token of your appreciation and they will return the pleasure a hundredfold. Men and women shake hands to greet each other. Dress casually; formal clothes are reserved for the church. Swimwear and revealing clothes are pool or beach attire only.

As typical of Kreols of the world, they value making the most of life in the earthly paradise. Like the old folks say, “Lanmor I voler’ (Death comes as a thief).
