Depending on who’s on the wheel, the drive to Ubud from Kuta will take you between an hour to an hour and a half, cruising northeastwards through around 12 miles of captivating scenery into the district of Gianyar. Called the heart of Bali, Ubud stands nonpareil as an art haven, a seed reputedly born of the massive exodus of Javanese artists, dancers and musician from Java upon the downfall of the Majapahit kingdom in the 15th century. Reinforced in the 1920’s by notable European artists that made Ubud their home, in tandem with Balinese royalty, the arts and culture exploded with kaleidoscopic intensity.
Yearning for a whiff of cool, wet mountain air, an overdose of greenery, flora, fauna, and inspiration, an immersion of intense cultural presentations, and a plethora of satiating culinary adventures? Come to Ubud.
Best Time To Travel
All year long, Ubud is just either packed or less packed. If relentless heat turns you off, do not come in the summer. In the spring, you’ll be bathed with gentle rainfall that swiftly passes through, but along with this pleasant time flow the travelers—both from within and out of Bali. Relatively less traffic may be enjoyed around fall time, when the temperatures cool a bit. It’s the lull before the great storm of tourists come for the holidays.
Climate
Being close to the mountains, Ubud never gets too scorching and is always bathed with some measure of rainfall—peaking from December to March, less at other times.
If you are a writer, Bali’s foremost literary event, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is worth checking out. Every September, this project of the Saraswati Foundation for the Arts, a non-profit organization, writers, readers, artists and performers from Indonesia, South-East Asia and the West come together to foster cross-cultural exchanges, understanding and enhancement in the literary field.
Allied to visiting the great museums you can learn about traditional Balinese art.
