Bali

Uluwatu

Uluwatu in one word would be: breathtaking. Translated, "ulu" means "land's end" and "watu" means "rock." Apart from its world-renowned super swells, which more than many consider Bali's best, Uluwatu’s lure is the absolutely mind-blowing panorama atop 100-meter cliffs, each angle as fantastic as the next. Take your pick of the many warungs perched on the cliffs from where you can drink off the Indian Ocean view while partaking of a hearty meal.

Uluwatu lies at the southern tip of Bali in the Badung Regency, Nusa Dua Peninsula, an infertile limestone plateau with a jagged coral coastline made accessible on wheels via a narrow paved road, and on foot via endless steep stairs. Just 30-minute scenic drive south of Kuta, the area is frequented by veteran surfers from all over the world who welcome Uluwatu’s rather menacing challenges. Definitely, NOT for swimming or rookie surfers.

Its uniquely spectacular undeveloped landscape appeals to a wide range of people—from sun baked surfers, budget-constrained backpackers to urbane city slickers who gravitate to world class facilities in the area. Aside from the droves of human tourists, you may find yourself in the company of the resident monkeys hustling for some goodies.

Things To Do

SURF! Uluwatu is a swell magnet and rarely goes flat—it goes from 3-10'! SURFSPEAK: There are 4 sections: Temples – a long and hollow wave that works on the mid to high tide; Peak – across the warungs aligned with the cave, best at high tide; Racetrack – a super fast barrel best at low tide, which at times can get seriously shallow; Outside corner – regarded one of the best waves in the world by many, the corner doesn’t start to break until the swell is at least in the 8' range, and then you are in for one long and fast ride. Southeast tradewinds are best.
