If you are a writer, Bali’s foremost literary event, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is worth checking out. Every September, this project of the Saraswati Foundation for the Arts, a non-profit organization, writers, readers, artists and performers from Indonesia, South-East Asia and the West come together to foster cross-cultural exchanges, understanding and enhancement in the literary field.

Allied to visiting the great museums you can learn about traditional Balinese art.

Once in Ubud, you must NOT miss the dance performances at the Ubud Palace on Jl. Raya, a nightly event that bespeaks tales from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Signature Balinese dance and eye movements pulsating to the almost hysterical jangle of the gamelan, with eye-popping phantasmagoric costumes will take your breath away. Also, you must witness at least one of their many Hindu ceremonies downtown or in any of the villages that surround Ubud. Bali is full of them.
