Koh Samui

Koh Samui is a tropical gem located in the warm blue waters off the country's south-east. Relatively unknown for years, this sun lover's paradise has also earned a reputation for retaining its friendly image as well as natural environment. Koh Samui is literally covered with coconut trees and bougainvillea, which in turn are surrounded by white sandy shores and stunning turquoise seas. Whether you're looking for remote beaches, great shopping, delicious dining or an exciting nightlife, you'll find it on Koh Samui.

Samui also has many sister islands; Koh Tao (top diving destination in Asia) and Koh Phangan (known for it's Full Moon Party).

Well known beaches are Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Big Buddha, Choeng Mon, Hua Thanon and Maenam.

Chaweng is the longest and most developed of Samui鈥檚 beaches. The soft white sands attract thousands of visitors all year round. It also has much of the best shopping and entertainment. Lamai beach is the second most popular beach after Chaweng, but it doesn鈥檛 have a crowded feel to it, even if it鈥檚 only half as long. Just to the north of Lamai there鈥檚 Tong Takian Bay, with a high, rocky headland and plenty of lush jungle sweeping up into the mountains.

Few visitors realize that Koh Samui also has a wealth of Buddhist culture. From ancient Buddha images to modern colorful temples, there is a vast selection of interesting sites to visit and sights to see. The main attraction is the awe inspiring 鈥楤ig Buddha鈥 on the island鈥檚 North Shore.

Things to do

Big Buddha

On the northern coast of Koh Samui is the famous Big Buddha shrine. Probably Samui's most well known landmark, the 12 metre high golden Buddha can be seen from several kilometres away. Inside the surrounding temples are many different shrines and other smaller ornate Buddhas. There is also a small market selling a wide range of lucky charms and other souvenirs, alongside numerous food stalls. Route 4171, near the airport.
