Transport

The traveler鈥檚 options for roaming around in Spain are many: train, car, plane or chopper, trams, mopeds, vespas, donkey, horse, bicycle and foot. For an adventurous listing of choices off the beaten path, check this out: http://www.awayfromthecrowds.com/.

If you choose to drive your own car, you must be at least 18 years old. Should you rent a vehicle, the age is upped to at least 21, with some car rental companies requiring your driver鈥檚 license to have been used for a minimum of one year. They also require a credit card. If you are a citizen of an EU member state, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or of any country that has adopted the standard license stipulated in the Geneva or Vienna conventions, your valid driver鈥檚 license will suffice. All others will need an International Driver鈥檚 License.

Road guidelines worth knowing: traffic is on the right; unless you use a hands-free system, do not talk on your mobile phone while driving; turn off radios and mobile phones while fueling; have an appropriate car seat to match weight and height for children up to 3 years; if you have to pull over, wear a reflective jacket before getting out of the car; position warning triangles appropriately along stalled vehicles; follow speed limits; don鈥檛 drive with alcohol in your blood; all car passengers and driver must wear seat belts; motorbike, moped and bicycle driver and passenger must wear helmets. Two fuel options: diesel and unleaded petrol.

Some unsolicited advice: if you can help it, DON鈥橳 drive in big cities if you are hypertensive, impatient, in a hurry, or you might ruin your mileage points on relaxation. But if you must, know the 鈥渞ush鈥 hours: 9:30-12:30am, 3:30-5pm, 6:30-8:30pm, and know too, that nothing 鈥渞ushes鈥 during these hours except time, and the fastest you may go is 10km/hr.

Then again, if you鈥檙e going the roads less traveled, out in the spectacular countryside, your own vehicle would be a fantastic choice.
