RWENZORI MOUNTAIN RANGE
One of Africa’s hidden gems is the Rwenzori mountain range in western Uganda, on the border with Democratic Republic of Congo, which includes the continent’s third-highest peak.
The Murchison Falls National Park is one of the nation’s two main reserves – along with Queen Elizabeth national Park and its largest protected area. Situated in north – west Uganda, this 3,893 sq km park takes its name from Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, a legendary Scottish geologists and head of the Royal Geographical Society in the mid 19th century. The national park dates from 1926 when it was declared a conservation area.
A wide diversity of scenery, vegetation and culture is offered by Mount Elgon National Park, in eastern Uganda. The park covers an area of 1,155 sq km and lies on the border with Kenya, 256 km north-east of Kampala.
At 34 sq km, Mgahinga is Uganda’s smallest park. It lies close to Bwindi in the south-west tip and on the border with the DRC and Rwanda, about 510 km from Kampala.
Next to Queen Elizabeth is the 760 sq km Kibale Forest National Park, an area of tropical rainforest known for its diverse fauna and flora. In particular, the park contains the largest population of forest elephants in Uganda. These are rarely seen, however, because of these dense vegetation.
