Interview with Chief Edem Duke, the Hon. Minister of the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and National Orientation 6th Nov 2013, WTM London
Q1. Most Chinese people would consider Nigeria to be a far-off and unfamiliar country. With that in mind, could you please give us a brief introduction of Nigeria?
A: It is certainly the case that Nigeria has always been an obscure destination for Chinese people. But, with the rapid development of modern communication and travel technology, the earth is increasingly becoming more like a small village. Recently, we have seen more and more large Chinese companies developing infrastructure in Nigeria. We believe trade between China and Nigeria will continue to grow, and will drive the relationship between our countries to a better and better place.
If you step back and observe our world, you will see China as the country with the world's largest population. You will also see that Nigeria is Africa's most populous country and is actually the world's 4th most populous country. In our world, one out of every eight people is ethnically African; and out of these Africans, one of every six is Nigerian. China is known to have a long and eventful history, while Nigeria's history has also been shown to date back over 8000 years.
Nigeria is rich in natural resources, has been named "Africa's cultural melting pot", comprises of over 500 unique ethnic groups, over 300 unique languages, 36 states, 774 local governments, and even has some states that are bigger than entire African Nations. China is Nigeria's largest trade partner, and both countries have established cultural centers displaying each other's cultures within their borders. Nigeria is also an oil producing country that exports its oil to over half the countries in the world. Currently, many Chinese oil exploration companies are cooperating with and developing business in Nigeria.
Q2. Is Nigeria a safe place for tourists to travel?
A: Every country has some safety concerns, whether major or minor. However, I can say that the Nigerian government considers public safety to be of the utmost importance. Many western media outlets already use Nigeria as a base of African operations and in recent years, many Chinese businessmen have come to Nigeria to develop industry for tourism, infrastructure construction, and agriculture. I personally know that many have enjoyed a great life in our country. These experiences provide first-hand proof that our country enjoys a stable and peaceful environment. I can assure you that the government of Nigeria has fully committed itself to consistently raising the level of public safety in our country.
Q3. What types of attractions does Nigeria offer for recreational travellers?
A: As a matter of fact, Nigeria has great potential for recreational travelers, with our main tourism industries being exploration tours and cultural excursions. Tourists interested in exploring, will have the chance to climb mountains, experience new ecosystems, and even track wild animals. Cultural excursions include, many year-round carnivals and are highlighted by the December carnival put on by our citizens. I guarantee you will have such a great time in Nigeria that you will not want to go back home. In addition to Nigeria's national events, each state holds their own unique attractions. It is well known, that Nigeria's southern ancient forests qualify as one of the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots, featuring a wide range of unique wildlife. I want to extend a whole-hearted invitation to all Chinese tourists to come and experience Nigeria first-hand.
Q4. With regards to the hotel industry, could you discuss Nigeria's ability to provide accommodations for tourists?
A: Nigeria truly has the right accommodations to fit any needs and budget, including a range of five to three star hotels. Bed and Breakfasts located in mountain villages are a particularly popular choice among tourists looking to get away. Our country is really a great place with a rich and diverse range of cultures, countless University opportunities, exploration options, a long history, and more. I've had the pleasure of providing these experiences to many Chinese Investors and businessmen. There has surely never been a better time to invest in Nigerian development and infrastructure.
Q5. Has the Nigerian Government taken any actions to allow Chinese tourists easy access to obtaining visas?
A: I can tell you that our department of immigration is working ceaselessly to improve our policies and allow greater numbers to enter Nigeria. They are currently researching appropriate policies and are expected to put out new policies in the near future that will allow Chinese citizens to obtain visas more conveniently.
